How to Groom a Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers

Golden retrievers are most commonly known for their friendly and gentle nature. They are incredibly popular throughout the globe in countries such as the US, UK, Australia, and Canada.

They work great as family pets due to their affectionate and playful nature. In addition, this breed commonly works in the service and therapy industry due to their easily trainable and calm demeanor.

This breed is most skilled in trainability, temperament, and energy. Some of the most common traits associated with them include their being friendly, loving, obedient and excitable making them a safe choice for many first-time pet owners.

Essential Tips for New Pet Owners

For new pet owners specifically, taking care of a Golden retriever may seem like a daunting task, however with proper preparation, owning a Golden can be one of the most rewarding experiences out there.  Two of the main questions that first time pet owners may be asking themselves is: 1) How do I groom my Golden Retriever? And 2) How often does my golden retriever need to be groomed?

Summer Grooming Tips for Golden Retrievers

The process of grooming all long-haired dogs is a similar process. Since these breeds have a longer coat in comparison to other breeds such as pugs or bulldogs, their hair is much more prone to knotting and matting than others.

For the summertime especially, it's important to remember to give your Golden’s short trims and frequent grooming sessions to ensure their fur is at a reasonable length.

Grooming Kit

Before you begin the grooming process on your pooch, we recommend investing in a high-quality Grooming Kit as Golden Retrievers need frequent grooming to maintain their coats.

Going to the groomers can be a time consuming and expensive process, with the PawsPik GroomingPro Rx Professional Pet Grooming Kit and Vacuum Cleaner pet cleaning can become a simple and easy process.

Effective Grooming Techniques for Golden Retrievers

To begin, we recommend using our grooming brush attachment first, this ensures the removal of loose hair and debris on long haired pets while creating a fuller look on their coats.

You should brush your Golden in the direction of their hair growth, starting towards their head and brushing down towards their tail and paw areas.

Second, you can use our dematting tool to remove any tangled or matted pieces of hair. If the matts are unable to be taken out by a grooming tool, we recommend cutting them out with a pair of sharp scissors, making sure to avoid nipping your dog in the process.

If necessary, you can also give your golden retriever a bath and a trim. With temperatures soaring this summer, it can become easy for dogs to become overheated with their heavy coats.

However, we strongly recommend avoiding shaving your golden retrievers as their coat is still necessary for insulation and protection from the sun.

PawsPik’s Grooming Kit and Vacuum is also capable of providing your furry companion with a summer cut as well.

With our clipping tool, you can easily cut your pet’s fur while simultaneously vacuuming the hair, allowing for a mess-free haircut.

With six different attachments, no matter what length your dog’s fur is at, you can feel at ease knowing you can keep them looking and feeling their best.

To trim their fur, you want to start around the bottom towards their paws first, next you can move your way up towards their undercoat and around their chest and neck as this is the area that tends to have the most excessive hair growth.

Golden Retrievers are fantastic pets, in terms of maintenance they only need to be groomed every 8 to 10 weeks.

However, to keep your pup feeling happy and healthy, we recommend light brushings for them at least once a week to daily depending on your dog’s shedding habits.
