America’s 250th Birthday is right around the corner! With the country’s semiquincentennial coming up this weekend millions of families will be out celebrating. There are important precautions that all pet parents should take before, during, and after celebrations to keep pets safe and secure. As many pets are easily frightened by fireworks and large crowds, 4th of July celebrations can be dangerous for families that do not take the necessary precautions to keep their animals safe during the weekend festivities.
Before the Festivities Begin
Prior to the start of your celebration, make sure that your pets are either microchipped or are wearing a tag that is able to properly identify them. Each year animal control and shelters nationwide report a 30% to 60% increase in the number of lost pets during the holiday weekend. Once fireworks start going off, many pets become spooked and may try to escape the home or backyard. It is vital to ensure that your pet has the proper identification in case of emergency in order to ensure that they are able to return home safely.
In addition to looking after your pet, it's also important to secure your home as well. Locking doors, closing windows, and securing any backyard fences in order to ensure that your pet can’t run out if they become scared. If you know that your pet is prone to breaking, tearing, or scratching items when they are frightened, it may also be beneficial to put away specific household items that you don’t want them to get into.

During the Celebration
One of the best ways to make sure that your four legged friend stays safe this weekend is to keep them at home. If you know that you may be visiting a crowded, loud, or busy area it may be best to leave your pet home for the night. That way, you can rest easy knowing that they are safe tucked away from any triggering lights or sounds.
For pet parents that plan on bringing their furry friend out with them for the night, remember to keep them away from certain items such as handheld sparklers, fireworks, or charcoal. Which could be dangerous and cause potential injury to your pet.
For all day outdoor celebrations such as barbecues, family reunions, and community events, don’t forget to take your pet inside and make sure they are drinking plenty of fresh water, as heat stroke and paw burns can occur if your pet is left outside unattended for extended periods of time.

After the Party Has Ended
If you’ve managed to keep your pet safe for the Fourth of July festivities, don’t think that your job is done yet. One step many pet parents often forget about when the celebrations have ended is to check around their yards and homes for any harmful debris. As trash and other toxic remnants can end up in your yard which could lead to potential safety issues if your pet ingests anything.
Celebrating Safely
Whether you’re going out, or staying in, it's important to know the proper precautions this Fourth of July to keep you and your furry friend safe. Taking minor precautions before, during, and after festivities can go a long way in creating a safer, happier environment for your pet. We hope that you and your family are able to enjoy a happy holiday weekend!
